Barbados Golf Courses
BARBADOS GC: The
original Barbados Golf Club was designed and
built in 1974 by the noted architect
Col. J. Harris. In the late 1990's it was
acquired and completely revamped as part of the
island's overall strategy to tap in to the
every growing golf tourism market. On September
1st 2000, the redesigned and completely reconstructed
Barbados Golf Club reopened as Barbados' first
public Championship golf course. The 6,805 yard
par 72 golf course has already hosted numerous
Caribbean and international tournaments and championships.
Magnificent trees strategically planted 25 years
ago give the course a mature ambience. Two lakes
intrude and enhance play on five holes and create
a dramatic "Amen Corner" on holes 15 and 16.
A series of coral waste bunkers carved through
4 holes adds to the excitement and personality
of the course. Ron Kirby, one of the most respected
and experienced golf course architects in the
world, redesigned the course to be a fair, challenging
and pleasurable walk amidst tropical surroundings.
Local Tip: Located on the South Coast.
Can be played several times on one trip as part
of a package deal at select hotels.
ROYAL WESTMORELAND: This 18 hole championship
course is one of Robert Trent Jones Jr.'s finest
designs, as far as the finesse, beauty and challenge
of the course is concerned. The layout perfectly
integrates into the surrounding undulating landscape.
The driving range, the sanctuary, pool and gym,
and the spectacular Clubhouse all overlook the
Caribbean Sea. The first class service provided
by it's employees make Royal Westmoreland a truly
unforgettable experience. Local Tip: Can
be played either as a Royal Westmoreland resident
or on a limited basis by staying in select Barbados
hotel properties.
SANDY LANE - OLD NINE (9
Holes): Part of the
original Sandy Lane course, built in 1961, this
9 hole layout offers an interesting contrast
to the other more challenging Sandy Lane courses.
With tree lined fairways it winds it's way
through the Old Estate, putting a premium on
accuracy as opposed to length. Local Tip: An enjoyable
compliment to either of the other two courses.
SANDY LANE - COUNTRY CLUB: Tom
Fazio did a masterful job in incorporating nine
holes from the old Sandy
Lane Course with nine new holes. At 7,060 yards
and a par of 74.7, this challenging layout features
lush greens, five lakes and lovely open fairways
with angled slopes. Most holes offer spectacular
Caribbean Sea views and are shared with the famous
Bajan Green Monkeys, which live in the gullies
in and around the course. The course is comprised
of five par threes, eight par fours, and five
par fives. Local Tip: Each foursome requires
the use of a forecaddy. GPS on all carts.
SANDY LANE - GREEN MONKEY: The
latest and greatest addition to what is now one
of the world's
premier golf resorts. The recently opened, Tom
Fazio designed, Green Monkey course at Sandy
Lane is a feast for the eyes. Cleverly built
around an old quarry, this course offers the
rarest and most elusive combination in golf course
design, in that it is both visually stunning
and an interesting and varied challenge of golf.
It is sure to become one of the Caribbean's,
if not the world¹s, most sought after places
to play in years to come. Local Tip: Can
only be played as a resident of Sandy Lane. GPS
on all carts.
Other courses of note: There are plans to add
at least two other 18 hole championship courses
on Barbados over the next several years.
