Italy - Golf Courses
Lake Como Area
A short forty-five minute drive from Milan, Como is the third
largest lake in Italy. The main characteristics of this lake are
its mountains and valleys and the beautiful villas which align
the lake front. Elegant and rugged and an inspiration to Romantics
like Liszt and Stendhal, Lake Como is dotted with tiny waterside
villages some only accessible by water.
GOLF
CLUB CARIMATE: Carimate lies in the heart of Brianza, just
16 miles from Milan and 10 miles from Como. It is set in the green
woods which have for centuries offered welcome shade to those
fleeing the city on hot summer days. The Carimate Golf Club is
situated on the estate surrounding a large medieval castle which
still stands today. Founded in 1960, the course was designed by
Piero Mancinelli. It's fairways wind their way through huge rhododendron
bushes alternated with age-old majestic oaks flanking the course.
GOLF CLUB MENAGGIO E CADENABBIA:
It was in 1907 that a certain Mr. Wyatt, son and heir of a wealthy
British subject, came as a tourist to the hills above Grandola
and Uniti. He fell in love with the place and settled there with
his wife. An English gentleman cannot survive without his game
of golf and Mr. Wyatt was no exception. He organized a makeshift
9-hole course which soon became a favorite meeting place for golf-lovers
in the area. In the 1950's the Golf Club was handed over to Italians.
Antonio Roncoroni deserves special praise for the considerable
improvements made to the club with skilful alterations which have
conserved the typically British tradition and style. Mention should
also be made of the golf library, considered to be one of the
finest outside of St. Andrews. The club is located 25 miles from
Como and is accessible either by car or water taxi.
GOLF CLUB MILANO: Located 12 miles
northwest of Milan is the Golf Club Milano, an extension of the
Park of Monza a one-time seat of the Austrian Empire. Built
in 1928, it is known as one of the more exclusive clubs in the
Milan area. It's pedigree is evident based on the many Italian
Opens which have been held there.
GOLF CLUB MONTICELLO: A 36-hole layout
comprising the 'Red' and 'Blue' courses. Many renowned players
from the golfing world have played here, most during the four
Italian Opens held at this course. A short 7 mile drive from Como,
Italian designer Luigi Caccia Dominioni created a layout which
marries the essential characteristics of golf in this region
tree lined fairways, views of the surrounding mountains and the
use of water on many holes to keep the golfer's interest peaked
at all times.
GOLF CLUB LA PINETINA: Founded in
1971, La Pinetina Golf Club is situated in Brianza, just 7 miles
from Como. It covers 158 acres of parkland in wonderfully unspoiled
countryside. In 1982, the entire complex was purchased by the
members and considerable structural and technical modernization
was carried out to bring the course to a high standard of perfection
- bunkers were extended, greens re-laid, etc. Today, the par-71
layout at La Pinetina is considered to be a top level Italian
championship course.
GOLF CLUB LE ROBINIE: One of the
newest and most spectacular courses in the area. Golf Club Le
Robinie is the creation of Jack Nicklaus - the first Nicklaus
designed course in Italy. The course has many of the Nicklaus
signature design trademarks including ample bunkering and diagonally
oriented greens.
GOLF CLUB VARESE: With the magnificent
12th century medieval monastery of Luviante as it's club house,
this course certainly has a unique feel to it. The club has a
long history, having opened in 1934. It's tree lined fairways
offer a strong test of golf to players of all abilities. It is
just 22 miles from the town of Como.
CIRCOLO GOLF VILLA D'ESTE: The Villa
d'Este Golf Club lies beyond the wonderful lake of Montorfano
in a splendid setting in the sunny Brianza, a short 5 mile drive
from Como. It is situated at a height of 1,200 feet in what could
easily be described as a Scottish landscape. This 6,365 yard course
was designed in 1926 by Peter Gannon. The layout winds it's way
between chestnut groves, birch and pine woods. It is considered
to be one of the most varied and difficult of the European "par
69" courses. This is manifested by the number of important
international tournaments held at the Villa d'Este each year.

Of glacial origin, Maggiore is the second largest lake in Italy.
It is known for it's varied landscape, dramatic scenery, luxuriant
vegetation and it's palatial villas which stand dramatically on
it's banks complete with beautifully landscaped gardens. The Borromean
Islands and Monte Rosa mountain range are the real pride of this
region. They provide the visitor with memorable vistas which will
not soon be forgotten.
CIRCOLO
GOLF BOGOGNO: Designed by famed American architect, Robert
Von Hagge, this 36-hole layout will provide a true test of golf
for all abilities. Spectacular views of the Monte Rosa mountains
abound throughout. When you are finished your round, enjoy the
atmosphere of the beautifully appointed clubhouse.
GOLF CLUB CASTELCONTURBIA: The 'Italian
Golf Manual' states that a golf course was first designed here
in 1898 covering the same area where the holes are to be found
today. The project for the present layout was designed and carried
out entirely by Robert Trent Jones Sr. The location is ideal,
set among age-old trees, streams and ponds, over slightly undulating
ground. The course blends magnificently with the unspoiled rural
countryside, with the Monte Rosa mountain range as a backdrop.
It is one of the most interesting layouts in Italy, offering 27
holes over three courses and a notable variety of golfing challenges.

area around Lake Maggiore with its luxuriant vegetation vivid
colors, the endless variety of trees and flowers, is the ideal
setting for golf. Des Iles Borromees is on the hilly side of the
lake, 600 meters above sea level. It is considered to be the 'jewel'
of golf in the Lake Maggiore area. It sits on a plateau above
the towns of Stresa and Lesa. Magnificent views abound throughout
