If the Old Course is a key element of your tour, then some degree of flexibility on dates is also very important as the Old Course has a number of tournaments and course closures throughout the season. Note: A GUARANTEED Old Course time can only be booked as part of a package with a minimum of six nights (five on certain tours). Another possible option is to utilize the Old Course ballot – see explanation below.

Old Course Ballot

Another way to access the Old Course which many visitors (and Golf Travel Co. clients) take advantage of is the ballot. Over the course of the year approximately 50% of Old Course starting times are not allocated to advance starting times but are allocated via the ballot (source, St. Andrews Links Trust). If designed correctly, a tour schedule can allow for good odds at receiving one of these times. In general, a minimum of three ‘qualifying days’ is required with the best months for the Old Course ballot being April, May, June, July and October. August offers lower odds due to a lesser number of available tee times and requires a longer stay in St. Andrews to maximize the odds of a ballot time. In September the course is closed for a considerable part of the month and the odds are very low. (Note: through careful planning we are very proud to report that we have had over a 95% success rate for our clients in the ballot over the past five years!).
