Wales Golf Courses
Northern Wales is blessed with a number of testing links layouts.
Combined with many unique and charming hotel properties, this
makes for a truly enjoyable golf travel experience.
ABERDOVEY:
Bernard Darwin, the great golf writer, was completely captivated
by this classic links course located at the end of a peninsula
on the west coast of Wales. A must play for lovers of links golf.
CONWY:
Golf has been played on this stretch of land since the 1860's.
The course has seen many revisions over the years, primarily due
to damage it received during both World Wars. Conwy has played
a major role in Welsh championship golf.
NEFYN & DISTRICT: Nefyn is one of the
lesser-known golfing treasures in the British Isles. Ian Woosnam
ranks the cliff top course in North Wales among his favorites.
ROYAL ST. DAVID'S (Harlech): Sometimes
referred to as Harlech, this exemplary links course is included
on the list of the world's great golf courses. Harlech, with the
13th century castle of the same name towering over it, has a setting
that is nothing short of spectacular.

South Wales
The southern part of Wales is home to a mixture of challenging
links and parkland courses. From the classic Royal Porthcawl (site
of the 1995 Walker Cup) to the newer Celtic Manor you are sure
to find a test of golf no matter which you attempt to master!
ASHBURNHAM:
Founded in 1894 it is one of the oldest clubs in Wales, Ashburnham
has hosted a number of professional and amateur events through
the years.
CELTIC MANOR: Robert Trent Jones,
Sr. created three superb layouts at this beautiful resort. The
newest course, Wentwood Hills, has been selected to host the Welsh
Open, beginning in 2000. The Roman Road course, winds through
woodlands and along steep ridges allowing for panoramic views
of the Welsh countryside. The Coldra Woods Course, although shorter
in length, is still a challenging test.
PENNARD: This course is set in a very
dramatic position on a cliff top overlooking the Bristol Channel.
It provides for a stern test when the winds blow in off the sea!
PYLE & KENFIG: While the more famous Porthcawl
lacks signature links dunes, Pyle & Kenfig offers an abundance
of them, yet is still open to the weather elements. Founded in
1922, the classic links layout is a regular site for the Welsh
Amateur.
ROYAL PORTHCAWL: Arguably the
finest course in Wales. While the course does not possess the
towering dunes of some links course, this characteristic makes
for a more demanding layout by allowing the weather to be a major
factor. It does not hurt the view either, as the sea is visible
from every hole. Royal Porthcawl finally received its proper recognition
when it was honored as the host of the 1995 Walker Cup Matches.
ST. PIERRE: Founded in 1962, there
are two parkland style courses at this beautiful resort. Over
its relatively short history, the Old course has hosted the Curtis
Cup, Dunlop Masters and, most recently, the 1996 Solheim Cup.
TENBY: An old fashioned seaside links
course and the oldest golf club in Wales. Besides being a great
links experience, Tenby also offers spectacular views of the coast.
Other Courses of Note: Southerndown.
