Hotel Maes-Y-Neuadd (Harlech). Maes-y-Neuadd's sense of permanence and strong character comes from its great age. Solidly built of Welsh granite and slate, it dates from the 14th century. The hotel's setting is superb. It stands in over seven acres of landscaped lawns, orchard and paddock on a wooded hillside high above the waters of Tremadog Bay. Snowdonia's grandeur is right on the doorstep and Harlech, with its mighty castle and famous golf links, is but three miles away. All modern comforts have been blended into a historic fabric that includes an inglenook fireplace, decorated plasterwork and oak beams. Each bedroom is individually designed and equipped to the highest standards. Special mention must be made of the food. Maes-y-Neuadd's skillfully prepared, imaginative cuisine, which combines French, Welsh and English influences, has won high praise in the leading food guides. Your hosts and resident owners - two couples, June and Michael Slatter and Olive and Malcolm Horsfall - offer friendly, individual attention at all times.

Bodysgallen Hall (Llandudno). Skillful, sympathetic restoration, antique furnishings, old paintings and an extravagant use of fresh flowers combine to create an ambience of country house hospitality at its best at Bodysgallen Hall. Lavish amounts of care and attention have been devoted to this distinguished 17th-century house. There are 19 supremely comfortable bedrooms in the hotel, together with equally well appointed cottage suites in the grounds. All have every conceivable luxury. The hotel's food and wine are also of uncompromisingly high standards and the Bill of Fare includes many traditional dishes associated with the great country houses of England and Wales. Another outstanding feature at Bodysgallen is its spa and leisure complex, which contains a 50ft swimming pool, whirlpool, sauna, steam room, gymnasium, beauty treatment rooms, club room, tennis court, restaurant and sun terraces.

Deluxe

Hotel Portmeirion (Portmeirion). Portmeirion can truly claim to be unique. This fantasy village, created by architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, stands on its own private peninsula overlooking sea, sand and mountain. At its heart is Hotel Portmeirion, whose beguiling, eclectic character matches that of its amazing surroundings. Decoration and furnishings in its glittering rooms are based on many different themes, just as the village itself is an enchanting jumble of Indian, Oriental and Italian influences. There is the Mirror Room, for example, with floor-to-ceiling gilt-framed mirrors. Throughout, there are rich furnishings and antiques brought from as far afield as China. The hotel's curvilinear dining room looks out across a beautiful estuary at high tide, it seems almost to be afloat, an impression enhanced by the stone ship permanently moored outside! As well as the view, guests enjoy a fine classical cuisine, complemented by an outstanding wine list.

Superior First Class

Coed-y-Mwstwr (Coychurch). Set in seventeen acres of grounds, just a few miles from the center of Bridgend, Coed y Mwstwr is a tranquil setting for both business and leisure guests. The hotel retains many of its original features, including an impressive domed ceiling in what is now the restaurant. The spacious bedrooms offer a good range of extra facilities. The hotel also boasts an outdoor heated swimming pool and tennis court.

Country House

Llangoed Hall (Brecon). There are so many noteworthy features within this discreet, restful hotel - the plush main hall, the library, the paintings, the antiques, the cuisine and the tranquil surroundings. Those who think that Llangoed Hall is the usual 'country house' hotel are in for something of a surprise. Guests are welcomed at the door before entering a magnificent house which has few of the familiar features of a hotel. There is no reception desk, for example, a deliberate omission which is part of Llangoed's philosophy of creating the atmosphere of a grand house rather than a hotel.

This outstanding hotel, the brainchild of Sir Bernard Ashley, husband of the late Laura Ashley, has attracted many accolades. A small fortune has been spent on renovating the hall, a dignified mansion overlooking the banks of the River Wye. Everything has been accomplished with exquisite taste. The bedrooms are individual masterpieces of interior design, with superb furnishing and fabrics. There are so many noteworthy features within this discreet, restful hotel - the plush main hall with its huge open fireplace, the library, the beautifully carved staircase, the upstairs gallery, the paintings (from Sir Bernard's personal collection), the antiques and fresh flowers, and the cuisine (described as 'modern classical British').

Deluxe

Celtic Manor (Newport). A destination in itself, this new, international scale hotel offers some of the most impressive and wide-ranging facilities in the UK. Three golf courses, two leisure clubs (with spa and beauty treatments) are coupled with 400 luxury bedrooms (including 32 suites). A cavernous atrium offers a striking first impression of the hotel, leading onto smart lounges and restaurants. Owen's offers fine dining with a modern Celtic twist and the Olive Tree provides a lighter Mediterranean option. Roof gardens, an art gallery and shops are further features of an operation which is awe inspiring in its scale and ambition. Much of the hotel overlooks golf courses and the open countryside.

Marriott St. Pierre (Chepstow). Set in the rolling hills of South Wales and 400 acres of its own grounds, you drive through tree-lined fairways before entering into the historic courtyard of this graceful 14th century manor house. Through its majestic archway the hotel itself is a sympathetic blend of ancient and modern. The days will drift away as you laze in the gardens overlooking the ornamental 11 acre lake.
